We may recommend a prostate biopsy if we find your PSA to be elevated, or an abnormality on exam. A biopsy of the prostate is performed in clinic and takes approximately 10–15 minutes.
Prior to the procedure you will be asked to take antibiotics to prevent infection. During the procedure an ultrasound probe in the rectum is used to visualize the prostate. The volume of the prostate is measured and a small amount of numbing medicine is then injected alongside the prostate. After injection of the anesthetic a small needle is used to take samples of the prostate.
After the procedure the samples are sent to a pathology lab where they are processed and examined under a microscope. It takes a few days for results to arrive. During this period we recommend rest and light activity. You will notice some blood in your urine, stool and ejaculate. This is normal and expected. If you have any fever after the biopsy please call us immediately.
If you have ever experienced a little anxiety over trying a new procedure, we offer Pro-Nox, a safe relaxation method for cosmetic and urological treatments.
